WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
From a Cadet to a Maritime Instructor - Jarrod David

When and where did you first join the Navy League? Which Corp were you a part of?

I joined Royal Canadian Sea Cadets in Sept of 1981. My Corps was RCSCC 235 Arrow Sea Cadets.

What did you like most about your experience as a Navy League/Sea cadet?

I enjoyed the travelling as well as the lifelong friends that I made.

Could you share with us a pleasant memory or an anecdote about your time at the Navy League?

When I was attending HMCS Quadra in Comox, British Columbia we had just fallen in for inspection. It was a surprise inspection and my friend across from me had just started peeling an orange. He was so surprised he did not know what to do. So as the inspection had started on the other end of the building he kept peeling the orange and tossing the peel out the window behind him. By the time the inspection gets down to him he had finished eating the orange. It was a perfect timing, and I had such a pain in my side from laughing. It was a good time.

How did the Cadet Program influence you throughout your life?
As I have gone through life, the skills that I learned have shaped me to be the person I am today. The skills I learned throughout the Cadet program have 100 % prepared me for life.

What skills did you gain as a Cadet that you’re still using today?
I am currently a marine instructor with Nova Scotia Community College in Port Hawkesbury, NS. If it was not for the skills I learned as a Cadet and CIC Officer, I would not be where I am today.

How did you decide what you wanted to do with your life? Was the Navy League a key player in this decision?

When I aged out, I joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a Bos’n Which lasted about 5 years. It was my experiences in Cadets that led to that decision. I would say the Navy League has a big part in my decision to joining the Navy.

Could you paint us a small picture of your life since leaving the Cadet program?

As I had left the RCN after 5 Years it would mark a change in my life as for the first time in my life I would not be attached to the military in any way since I was 12 years old. After two years outside the program I decided I still wanted to be involved with the military and the Sea Cadets. I joined the CIC as a Cadet Instructor.  As of today I am marking 34 years of combined service in the Sea Cadets, CIC and a Civilian Instructor with the CCO. I really believe in giving back to the program that as influenced my life immensely which is why I continue to give back to the best youth program in Canada.

What personal achievements are you most proud of?

My long service to the CCO as well as the thousands of Cadets I have helped train at the LHQ and CTC levels.
