Awesome Volunteer - Richard Carpenter

June 11th 2025
Richard Carpenter, Commanding Officer of NLCC #26 Admiral Landymore since 2023.

How did you get involved with The Navy League of Canada and why did you decide to continue with the Cadet program?
My Great Grandmother enrolled me when I was 10 years old. I have stayed with the cadet program throughout the years because of how my life has benefited from the structure, life lessons and opportunities the program offers. I have made an entire family of cadet friends that I wouldn't have if not for the Navy League and Sea Cadet program.

What do you particularly enjoy about the Cadet Program and why did you decide to continue as a volunteer with the Navy League?
As a cadet myself I enjoyed the personal challenges and sense of pride that came from being apart of the program. I came back as a volunteer upon retirement as a sea cadet to ensure that future generations were able to have the same experiences.

As a role model within The Navy League or Sea Cadet Program, what advice would you give to someone interested in joining the Cadet program but may have reservations or uncertainties about the commitment? How can potential recruits overcome these hesitations and embrace the opportunity to serve and lead?
My advice would be to jump in with both feet! there is nothing to lose and everything to gain. The opportunities are endless on what ever you'd like to achieve. The program offers structure as well as flexibility. I would suggest participating in all that your able to, to be able to get the most out of the program. Reservations and uncertainties on the commitment itself, can be addressed by setting short term goals. Personally, I did not want to be a cadet in the beginning and it only took 2 weeks for me to be completely immersed into the program. Thankful each and every day that I stuck with it.

Finally, is there anything you would like to express to the Navy League community, your fellow officers, or the broader public in light of your "Awesome" appointment?
I would like to thank the Navy League of Canada for the opportunities that I have been given! To my fellow officers and volunteers I would highly recommend if given the opportunity to take on a challenge or a new task, do not be afraid to embrace and run with that opportunity. This program has so much to offer our youth and volunteers alike! there are so many ways to be involved on every level of the program, go out there and make a difference!
