As it relates to our Cadet Members, all activities must be approved by both DND and/or the Navy League for insurance coverage.

Additional insurance coverage is available to individual Branches to include such things as Property (Contents), Boiler and Machinery for buildings and Boat Insurance for vessels owned by the Navy League. These coverages can be obtained through the League’s National Office.

Please note, that insurance for Buildings and Contents, as well as Boat Insurance is not provided automatically. All Branches requiring these types of insurance coverages, must apply through the National Office.

The Navy League of Canada – National Office is responsible for insuring all assets (property, building and boats) that are owned by the Navy League.
GENERAL LIABILITY INSURANCE

These policies provide legal liability insurance to the Navy League of Canada for the activities of the organization across the country. The Named Insured on the policies includes the Navy League of Canada, the Provincial Divisions, local Branches or Sponsoring Committees of the Navy League of Canada and to Royal Canadian Sea Cadets and Navy League Cadets.

The policies also insure volunteers who have paid an annual fee entitling them to membership in The Navy League of Canada.

The policies specifically exclude from coverage, members of the Cadet Instructor Cadre (CIC), as these individuals are deemed to be agents of the Crown and have protection other than through The Navy League of Canada’s insurance policies.
ACCIDENTAL DEATH & DISMEMBERMENT INSURANCE (AD&D)

AD&D insurance is provided to cadets and adults in specified classes for accidental death or accidental injury resulting during authorized cadet activities. This coverage is intended to provide supplemental coverage and is not considered the sole source of coverage. More specifically, the AD&D policy will only cover expenses after provincial health coverage, private medical or other family group benefits are fully exhausted.

Note: Coverage may be limited in the following instances:

  • While travelling to the Cadet Unit/Building, the Member is covered for only direct travel from home to the Cadet Unit/Building; any stops or deviations of this route will terminate coverage.
  • Adults transporting cadets in their own vehicles assume liability for the cadets and must have sufficient auto insurance in compliance with the laws of the province in which they live.
  • Under certain circumstances, insurance coverage is provided directly by the Canadian Armed Forces, such as some emergency dental and medical attention and eyeglasses damaged during summer training activities.

In the event of accidental injury, the DND Form (2299) must be completed and forwarded to the Regional Cadet Support Unit.

Where there is a claim, the accident must be reported to the National Officer within thirty (30) days from the date of the occurrence. Medical or hospital accounts, etc. may be forwarded later.

Accident Claim Forms (link) are available through the Division Office or directly from the National Office.

Copies of all accounts for which the claim is being made should be attached to the Claim Form. If all accounts are not available at the time of making the claim, an estimated amount of the total additional accounts payable should be shown.
DIRECTORS’ & OFFICERS’ LIABILITY INSURANCE

The directors’ & officers’ liability insurance policy provides indemnification to directors and officers as well as to the entity for alleged wrongful acts committed by them while engaged in activities related to the Navy League of Canada.

Coverage includes all elected Directors and Officers at the Branch, Division and National levels.
